The Preliminary Task

†We were given a Preliminary Task to complete, the task was to shoot a short sequence of a character entering a room and having a conversation with an other person.
We then used the Continuity editing style to put it all together.

Continuity editing is a style of editing used in cinema and television. Its point is to smooth over any rough parts of your shot for example cutting to a close up of a door opening and the door continuing to open from the other side.

in the making of the shot we had to include three things.
one. The 180 Degree rule
two. Match on action shot
three. Reverse shot

The match on action shot is for example the door opening slightly on the close up of the hand and then continuing to open but from the other side of the door.

The Reverse shot is when the camera switches fro person to person but over the other actors shoulder so both actors are in the shot.

The 180 Degree rule is if one over shoulder shot is on an actors left the next in the conversation should be over the other actors right, so the camera is always on the same side of the actors.

I think over all my group succeeded with the three rules and used them effectively.
But If i could i would go back and reedit the match on action shot with the door because after watching it back it is slightly out.

Good on q.5- but why no visuals for the Juno task? you need to put those in as well.

CASE STUDY OF A FILM OPENING

The film i looked at was Watchmen.

The first thing you see at the beginning of the film is this image introducing the studio
"Warner Bros" and "Paramount" Warner Bros being the most likely place the film was shot.

The second shot shows us that the film was produced by 'Lawrence Gordon' and 'Lloyd Levin'.

Shot three introduces the director 'Zack Snyder'
And also showing us a Key character 'The Comedian'This is the fourth shot showing us the name of the film and an introduction to all of the heroes in the story.

The rest of the of the first two minuets give us the names of the actors playing the main characters in the film.
.Malin Akerman
.Billy Crudup
.Matthew Goode
.Carla Gugino
.Jackie Early Haley
.Jeffery Dean Morgan

The hole clip sets the scene and time period for the film.

Juno Film Opening

This Video is the Juno opening shot by me Sven Tilly and Hannah, and edited by me and Sven.

The task we were set was to remake the Juno opening as accurately as possible. the location didn't have to be the same but the angle and length of each shot had to be as close as we could get to the original.

First off we were given the Juno opening to look at. We had about an Hour to watch this clip and plan ours. We started by talking about what we needed to do this shoot for example; A red jumper skateboard and other props like the guitar, Then we made a storyboard and shot list for all the shots in the sequence.

On the day of shooting we had the morning to finish any planning we hadn't yet done and have a look around for potential shot locations. After a brake we were introduced to the cameras and tripods for the first time, then let out to shot our opening.

The shoot went pretty smoothly and we got all the shots we wanted. It took about an hour and a half to shoot the sequence but we found a place for each shot.

To edit the sequence we were split into two groups, Me and Sven were in one group and Tilly and Hannah were in another.

We had about one hour to edit the video. Me and Sven split the hour in half so we both did some editing and then both went though it at the end. We pretty much just put the shots into sequence and trimmed them off to fit the actual video. We added a flashing text in the titles to give it more of the Juno opening feel.

overall i found the shooting and editing of this video allot of fun and cant wait till our next one.

Feedback

Though I am happy for you to make the blog look more attractive, do remember that this is submitted as part of your assessment, so just Rob’s blog is enough for the title!

You make some very astute observations about the placement of characters in Touch of Evil.

For the post on Shifty, you need to say more about how the moodboard task worked and how it was based on a particular scene and trying to give a sense of atmosphere from that. Later you will be creating moodboards for your own project ideas.

Student Film Opening

i found this student film project on youtube.
i like the idear behind this fim and thought that it was filmed well but the zombie acting was a little random.
Im not sure if it was suposed to be a funny flim but it did make me laugh.
Over all i think it was a good opening but im not sure if it give the desired efect on the viewer.
if this is suposed to be funny it realy works.

Film Openings

The three Film Openings i watched were -The Player
                                                              -Touch Of Evil
                                                              -Saul Bass Title Sequences

Im going to write about the " Touch Of Evil" opening.

I found the black and white style of the film and the old costumes and look of te set realy made it feel like you were going back in time atching it. I liked that the people in the car who where going to blow up were almost always on the right of the screen, as if it was the les important place to be as they only had a small part. overall i liked the opening and thought it was well put together.

Here is the opening

I made this Postcard using Adobe Photoshop. We were given basic instructions to create a postcard using layers, to advertise creative and media.

First of i uploaded two pictures into Photoshop then set out the first as the back ground.
To give the comic book look to the picture i use the crosshatch tool and picked the style of hatching, "Dark Lines". Then i used the magic wand to take out the unwanted image between the links of the fence and put it on top of the background. I used the find edges tool on the fence, crosshatched it and then put it to about 65% opacity. After adding and editing the text i moved the mesh fence over to the top of the hole image so the viewer has to look though the fence to see the rest of the image.

Final Cut

the video below was created on the final cut video editing program.
i had never use this program before but it was vary easy to use. its identicle to other editing programs ive seen before so i think i picked it up quite quickly.

i found it relitivly easy to get into the editing and found the program well layed out.

during the day we only did basic fades and text but i found it enjoable to watch the end product.

Moodboard

This is the moodboard me and my group made for the film, Shifty.

The basic thought for the board was a urban
grimy feel so we added city scape, and strange
looking people to give a psychedelic drugged up
feel. The dark look of the streets is how i feel the
movie would be with the drug dealing and unlawful
actions.
